Arenal Report

first_imgNo related posts. A series of break-ins and robberies has occurred in the Arenal area and continues unabated. The thieves are targeting the homes of Ticos as well as Gringos. These are not just “targets of opportunity,” as the Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) labels theft of objects left out in the open such as bicycles and tools, etc. These robberies involve forceful entry of homes and bodegas. The most recent report involved breaking steel-reinforced rods out of concrete to remove hinges and locks from a bodega door. A chapeadora (weedwacker) worth $600 was stolen. The Parcelas elementary school in Barrio San Antonio was stripped of virtually everything, including the pots, pans, eating utensils and electric appliances in the kitchen.Kudos to Moya’s restaurant for hosting a party with live music and great food as a fundraiser to replace the items stolen from Parcelas school.Although OIJ is working on these cases, watching friends and neighbors be victimized has been extremely disheartening. We hope the perpetrators are soon brought to justice. On a happier note, Jeff Spencer reports that an indoor soccer league is being developed with the youngsters of the Arenal area. Teams will be formed using a draft format to distribute talent evenly. Anyone interested in participating may contact Jeff at 8991-7651.–William & Jean Priestjean_pri@msn.com Facebook Commentslast_img read more

Unity Party leaders to blame for Rodolfo Hernándezs exit campaign manager says

first_imgNo related posts. Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC) campaign manager Humberto Vargas on Friday accused three top party leaders – Rolando Laclé, Gonzalo Fajardo and Jorge Guardia – of sparking internal clashes that led to the resignation of former presidential candidate Rodolfo Hernández. In an interview on Telenoticias Channel 7, Vargas said those three politicians, along with members of PUSC’s Strategy Committee, attempted to force Hernández to dismiss several party members, including three of his closest advisers.Hernández announced his resignation on Thursday, just five months after winning the party’s nomination and one day after the 2014 election season kicked off.Hernández was the only candidate from a major party not to attend the opening campaign ceremony on Wednesday at the Supreme Elections Tribunal in San José.In a public letter Hernández, who is director of the National Children’s Hospital, claimed that he was “a victim of backstabbing” by members of his own party.Although Hernández had never participated in politics, recent polls showed him as second favorite to win the presidency, behind ruling National Liberation Party candidate and former San José Mayor Johnny Araya.PUSC leaders are currently considering alternative candidates including Rodolfo Piza, who placed second in the party’s primaries and was Hernández’s candidate for vice president.Party officials also are considering sitting out the 2014 presidential race, running only candidates for the Legislative Assembly instead.A group of PUSC supporters on Saturday will march to Hernández’s home in eastern San José to ask him to reconsider his decision. The march will begin at 11 a.m. at the La Hispanidad roundabout, east of the capital, and will end in Sabanilla. Facebook Commentslast_img read more

Dominican Javier Fortuna knocks Tiquito Vásquezs hopes for world title

first_img Facebook Comments Costa Rican boxer Bryan “Tiquito” Vásquez lost to Dominican Javier Fortuna Friday night in a heated battle for theWorld Boxing Association‘s  super featherweight, 130 pounds title. It was a gripping fight with both Vásquez and Fortuna landing a number of punches, however Fortuna’s precision, speed and stamina allowed him to improve his score as the rounds progressed.Tiquito had a lot of heart but he was unable to mount any sort of sustained offense against Fortuna. The fight was sometimes sloppy with both fighters throwing punches in the air. Vásquez began pressing the action in Round 3 and hammering Fortuna on the ropes, but overall the Dominican landed more blows and cleaner connects.Fortuna landed 64 more punches than Vásquez. Out of a total of 637 punches, he landed 237, or 37 percent, while Tiquito landed only 25 percent, or 174 out of 710 attempts.During the last seconds of the seventh round the Dominican was about to knock Vásquez out, but Tiquito managed to return a few hits.In previous days, Fortuna had predicted a knock-out ending for the fight, however the bout, held at the Barclays Center in New York, went on for the full 12 rounds.Fortuna (28-0-1, 20 knockouts), ended the last two rounds by dancing and celebrating to a chorus of boos from the crowd. But the judges’ decision was unanimous in favor of the Dominican: 117-111, 117-111 and 116-112.In the end, the fight’s intensity showed on both of the boxers’ faces: Fortuna had a visibly swollen left eye and Tiquito displayed cuts on both eyes.Vásquez (34-2, 18 knockouts) said he has to keep his head high, look forward and continue.“He constantly hit me with his head and elbows, he threw several low blows but the referee never said anything. The guy is too dirty, that’s the right word for him, but it doesn’t matter because in the end he won the title,” a visibly upset Vásquez told Telenoticias reporters who attended the fight.Shortly after the fight Tiquito posted a message on Twitter saying he was sorry to have dissapointed his fans and that he had given it his best shot. The party is a deeply secular, and affiliated with the PKK. The People’s Protection Units, known by its Kurdish acronym YPG, is the main Kurdish fighting force in Syria.Since Syria’s civil war began, the Kurds have made unprecedented gains, strengthening their hold on the far northeast reaches of the country and carving out territory where they declared their own civil administration in areas under their control. They have demonstrated a surprising resilience in their fight against Islamic State group militants in Kobani, pushing them out in January with the help of U.S.-led airstrikes. Syrian, Iraqi and Turkish Kurds took part in cross-border operations to help rescue tens of thousands of displaced people from the minority Yazidi group from Iraq’s Sinjar Mountain in August last year and they continue to fight in cooperation with one another against the Islamic State group in areas along the Iraq-Syria border. Star Alliance improves customer experience at LAX

first_img Star AllianceSource = Star Alliance Star Alliance is improving customer experience at Los Angeles’ Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) through a combination of co-locating the member airlines in a one single check-in zone and the progressive introduction of more automation. The aim is to offer customers a wider choice of check-in options, giving them more control over this part of the travel process and creating time savings. As a prerequisite to providing these enhancements, check-in for all 10 Star Alliance member carriers operating out of TBIT has been consolidated in one singe aisle. The check-in counters for Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, EVA Air, Ethiopian Airlines, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, SWISS and Turkish Airlines are now all in aisle “C”, at the north end of the terminal. This not only allows customers to easily identify the location of the check-in desks, but also permits the member airlines to share counter space to even better match capacity to the actual demand.A range of joint automated services is also progressively being made available by the TBIT based Star Alliance member carriers. Passengers are being encouraged to make use of the various mobile and web check-in options available. For those needing to print boarding passes at the airport, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has installed 24 common-use kiosks, which can print both boarding passes and luggage tags.In addition to the traditional full service check-in desks, fast bag-drop counters can also be made available for those who have opted to self-tag their bags.To further support these improvements, LAWA will be opening a new North Security Checkpoint located at the end of Aisle “C” sometime in March. With Scandinavian Airlines set to begin services to Los Angeles from Stockholm from mid-March, the total number of Star Alliance airlines serving the airport will rise to 15.Scandinavian will join the current 10 members in TBIT, with Air Canada and Avianca offering flights from Terminal 2, COPA from Terminal 6 and United from Terminals 7 and 8. Jointly they offer around 1,150 daily flights from the airport, connecting 79 cities in 24 countries. The changes at TBIT are being implemented in close cooperation with LAWA and have to a large extent come from the experience Star Alliance made during the Terminal 2 project at London – Heathrow Airport, where a completely new check-in concept was put into effect. All Star Alliance member airlines use the same check-in kiosks, make use of common bag-drop counters and even share Economy Class check-in desks.Using the success of the Terminal 2 project as a base, the Alliance is enhancing the customer experience at other airports around the globe, implementing various technological advances made in London.last_img read more
