Govt allows BCCI duty free import for World Cup

first_imgThe Government has allowed zero duty import of sports and broadcasting equipment by BCCI for the World Cup cricket tournament starting February 19.BCCI headquarters in MumbaiLast month the government had de-recognised BCCI as a national sports federation and had decided to take away the customs duty benefits it enjoyed.   “The Central Government hereby exempts the (specified) goods…when imported into India for the purpose of organising the ICC World Cup 2011, from the whole of the duty of customs leviable…,” a Finance Ministry notification said.The concessions come within three weeks after the Centre had withdrawn customs duty exemption on import of goods by the BCCI or bodies certified by it, following non-compliance of mandatory requirements.The decision on January 17, took away the exemptions following the Sports Ministry de-recognising BCCI as a national sports federation or the apex body for cricket in India.As per the latest notification dated February 9, duty relaxation has been given on sport equipment; medical instruments; photographic and audio-visual equipment; broadcast equipment and supplies; and computer and other office equipment.The duty waiver would be on goods imported by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or by any importer authorised by BCCI in relation to World Cup, 2011.The importers of equipment for World Cup, however will have to furnish a bond for the value of the imported goods supported by a bank guarantee to the extent of 25 per cent.Besides, the imported goods would have to be re-exported within three-months from the date of official closure of the World Cup.advertisementThe imports and the subsequent re-export would be allowed from the sea ports at Mumbai or Chennai, Inland Container Depot at Tuglakabad.The imports would also be allowed from airports at Mumbai, Chennai or Delhi. The initiative is intended to boost growth in life sciences firms and jobs by establishing formal alliances between military, educational and private sector entities, reports the San Antonio Business Journal. “We can partner with and leverage these missions to create commercialization opportunities for our local entrepreneurs and to increase the growth of our life science ecosystem,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. … The Air Force has agreed to pay the city of Portsmouth, N.H., up to $14.3 million to construct a water treatment facility with a dual filtration system to eliminate two types of PFAS chemicals from city-owned wells at the former Pease AFB. The Air Force previously paid for a demonstration project started two years ago of activated carbon filters for two wells at the site now known as Pease International Tradeport, reports Seacoastonline.com. The city anticipates starting construction on the 18-month construction project early next year. … The 49th Wing at Holloman AFB, N.M., and all co-located units will shift from Air Combat Command to Air Education and Training Command on Oct. 1, officials announced Thursday. The realignment will place Holloman, which hosts MQ-9 Reaper and F-16 Fighting Falcon formal training units, under the major command with responsibility for recruiting, training and educating airmen. Banani double rape Recording of depositions begins

first_imgA court here on Monday started recording depositions of witnesses against five accused, including Shafat Ahmed, in a case filed for raping two private university girls in a Banani hotel.Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 M Safiul Azam recorded the testimony of the complainant of the case in camera in the presence of the counsels of both plaintiff and the defence, reports UNB.The tribunal also fixed October 31 for the next hearing in the case, said plaintiff’s lawyer Fahmida Akhter Rinki.After the deposition of the complainant, Shafat’s lawyer Mosharraf Hossain Kajal started cross-examining the witness which could not be completed today, she said.The five accused were produced before the court from jail during the proceedings.The two female private university students were raped at The Raintree Dhaka hotel at Banani in the city on March 28 last. One of the victims filed a case with Banani Police Station on May 6 over the incident.On June 8, police pressed charges against all the accused in the case.Of the accused, Shafat Ahmed, 26, and Nayem Ashraf, 30, were sued for raping the two female university students while Sadman Shafiq, 24, Shafat’s driver Billal, 26, and his unnamed bodyguard for abetting in the crime.The prime accused, Shafat Ahmed, is the son of Dildar Ahmed who owns top jewellery brand “Apan Jewellers” along with three of his brothers.last_img read more
