Saina Nehwal set up a blockbuster women’s singles final against PV Sindhu at the Yonex-Sunrise 83rd Senior National Badminton Championships in Guwahati on Friday. For the second year running, India’s top two female shuttlers will go head-to-head for the senior national title and it will be a mouthwatering clash.Saina Nehwal, who had demolished Neha Pandit in the quarter-final earlier in the day, took the court against Vaishnavi Bhale in the semi-final and registered an easy 21-15, 21-14 win to advance to the final.SAINA NEHWAL BEATS PV SINDHU TO DEFEND WOMEN’S SINGLES TITLEEarlier, top seed PV Sindhu had staved off a gutsy fightback from Assam’s wonderkid Ashmita Chaliha to enter the final at the Yonex-Sunrise 83rd Senior National Badminton Championships in Guwahari on Friday. The two-time champion had to claw her way back from 16-19 down in the second game and needed two match points to douse the challenge of the spirited fourth seed Chaliha 21-10, 22-20.The 19-year-old girl from Assam had already announced her arrival last year with BWF titles at the Dubai International Challenge and the Tata Open. On Day 4 of the Senior Nationals, she gave yet another display of her immense talent when she steadied her nerves and got back into contention from an 8-13 deficit in the second game. Ashmita Chaliha gave a stiff fight to PV Sindhu in the second game of the semi-final. (BAI Photo)Egged on by the loud crowd, Chaliha drew level at 13-13 and jumped into a 17-14 lead against the Rio Olympics silver medallist before advancing to 19-16. That’s where Sindhu’s vast experience came in handy and she evened the score at 19-19 to have a match point at 20-19.advertisementBut the resilient Ashmita was not done yet and she saved the first match point only to see her World No. 6 opponent wrap it up on her second in 38 minutes.Last year in Nagpur, Saina had outsmarted Sindhu to take the national title. While Saina would want to defend her crown, Sindhu would love to turn the tables. On the other hand, Sourabh Verma also had an easy 21-14, 21-17 win over Kaushal Dharmamer to enter the final of the tournament. Sourabh is already a national champion and will take on the young star Lakshya Sen.In the last singles match of the day, Lakshya Sen outplayed the former national champion Parupalli Kashyap to register a 21-15, 21-15 win and entered the final.Lakshya was the favourite based on his form and he showed exactly why he is rated so highly and is seen as an emerging star. Lakshya began the match with a bang and raced to an 11-3 lead in the first game. Parupalli Kashyap could not keep up with the young Lakshya Sen in the semi-final. (BAI Photo)Even as Kashyap fought back hard in the second part of the first game, closing down the gap to as near as 13-15, Lakshya held his nerves to take the first game with ease. The second game began in a more stiff manner but soon Lakshya started pulling away. With a lead that Kashyap failed to track down, Lakshya won the match with a brilliant defensive block. Lakshya Sen beat Parupalli Kashyap to set up a final against Sourabh Verma. (BAI Photo)Rohan Kapoor and Kuhoo Garg lived up to their reputation as the top seeds in mixed doubles. The World No. 46 pair needed only 32 minutes to dispatch Vighnesh Devlekar and Harika V 21-15, 21-16 to enter the final. They will take on the unseeded combine of Manu Attri and Maneesha K, who continued their rampage with a fine 21-18, 21-17 win over Shlok Ramchandran and Mithula UK.In women’s doubles, top seeds Meghana Jakkampudi and Poorvisha S Ram continued their quest for the title with a strong 21-13, 21-16 victory over Kuhoo Garg and Anoushka Parikh. Alex Hales is in hot water after testing positive for use of recreational drugsReutersWith just over a month to go for the ICC 2019 Cricket World Cup, England’s cricket team has been hit by an unwanted controversy. Alex Hales, the opening batsman, who had apparently gone on an ‘indefinite leave’ citing ‘personal reasons’ has now been discovered to be actually serving a 21-day ban after testing positive for use of a recreational drug. According to a report published in the Guardian newspaper, Hales was discovered to be in use of the aforementioned substance following a test which is routinely conducted by the England Cricket Board (ECB).The right hander, who plays for Nottinghamshire in county circuit, is part of the England 15-man squad for the upcoming World Cup. His decision to seek an indefinite leave had left the team concerned about his availability for the big event that starts on May 30.Prone to controversyThe 30-year old is no stranger to controversies. In 2017, he was with Ben Stokes when the latter was involved in a street brawl outside a pub in Bristol that led to legal action as well as penalties from the cricket authorities. Apart from that, Hales had tested positive for drug use once before as well, something that compounds his present offence. Hales was with Ben Stokes during the infamous brawl in BristolADRIAN DENNIS/AFP/Getty ImagesEngland Cricket Board (ECB) has created a strong policy to detect and act in such cases. This follows the death of Tom Maynard, a budding Surrey cricketer who died in 2012 and was discovered as having been under the influence of recreational substances. All England cricketers are required to submit their hair follicles for testing on a regular basis.Hales has been in and out of the England ODI team since the incident with Ben Stokes. It was the episode in Bristol that first allowed Jonny Bairstow to come into the playing XI as his replacement in the opening position. The impressive performances by Bairstow meant that Hales had to often be the reserve batsman in the squad. The FalloutThe primary opening partnership for the English ODI team currently is Jason Roy and Bairstow. The danger for Hales now is an exclusion from the eventual 15-man squad that England announce. The squad that has been selected as of now is a provisional one as the ICC rules allow teams to make changes till May 23. If England want, they can choose to leave Hales out of the final 15.England’s national side have a training camp taking place in Cardiff which begins this weekend. The Notts player is expected to join it. The English team kick off their international summer with an ODI against Ireland on May 3. This will be followed by a very crucial 5-match ODI series against Pakistan beginning on 8th of the month. The final composition of the playing XI as well as the 15-man squad will depend on the outcomes of this series.
Kolkata: Several animal lovers were allegedly beaten up by the Bidhannagar Police on Tuesday night in front of Swasthaya Bhavan. Actor Debolina Dutta and Tathagata Mukherjee stated that the police had beaten them without any provocation. However, Bidhannagar Police have denied the allegation of beating them up and alleged that the group of pet lovers were creating a nuisance and hurled abusive languages at the cops and also at the lady police personnel. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedAccording to Dutta, a group of animal lovers were protesting against the decision of allowing the two nursing students to attend class who were allegedly accused of murdering 16 puppies recently. Police personnel were also there since morning. It is alleged that late on Tuesday night, all of a sudden, police personnel started using abusive languages at them. They even assaulted a protester. Seeing him getting harassed, others present there protested. It is alleged that the cops then started beating up the demonstrators. Also Read – Bose & Gandhi: More similar than apart, says Sugata Bose”We were peacefully sitting on the road and sloganeering. All of a sudden, police personnel started abusing us verbally and even beat us up despite our protest being a peaceful one. Even male police personnel heckled female protesters. Actually, they wanted to end their duty and go home and thus, they did this,” said Dutta. Though the actor and others claimed that police had beaten them without any provocation, Bidhannagar Police have denied the allegations. According to senior police officials, the protesters were creating nuisance in the area. They were repeatedly asked to leave the place but they did not bother to listen. On the contrary, protesters used abusive languages targeting the cops. Deputy Commissioner of Police (headquarters) Amit Javalgi gave a written statement which read: “They marched towards the Swasthaya Bhavan and were stopped at the gates as 144 CrPC is promulgated around the building. The animal lovers continued their protest. The protest continued till midnight. The police did not impede them from doing so. However, after midnight, few protestors started beating drums causing nuisance in the area. Matters became serious when few of them started passing lewd remarks on lady police officers. When the officers went to attend and resolve the issue amicably they were pushed by few agitated protestors. Police tried to confine those who attacked them but they fled. The rest of the crowd left peacefully after that. If the police had any intention to take action against the protestors, they would have done it much earlier and wouldn’t have waited till 1 am. No matter what the cause creating public nuisance by beating drums in the dead of the night and abusing policemen and lady police officers on duty is an offence. Police are duty-bound to ensure peaceful assembly but are equally responsible to ensure order.”
Keeping yourself physically and mentally active in middle age may lower the risk of developing dementia decades later, a study claims. Mental activities included reading, playing instruments, singing in a choir, visiting concerts, gardening, doing needlework or attending religious services, according to the study published in the journal Neurology. “These results indicate that these activities in middle age may play a role in preventing dementia in old age and preserving cognitive health,” said Jenna Najar from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”It’s exciting as these are activities that people can incorporate into their lives pretty easily and without a lot of expense,” Najar said in a statement. The study involved 800 Swedish women with an average age of 47 who were followed for 44 years. At the beginning of the study, participants were asked about their mental and physical activities. Participants were given scores in each of the five areas based on how often they participated in mental activities, with a score of zero for no or low activity, one for moderate activity and two for high activity. The total score possible was 10. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveParticipants were divided into two groups. The low group, with 44 per cent of participants, had scores of zero to two and the high group, with 56 per cent of participants, had scores of three to 10. For physical activity, participants were divided into two groups, active and inactive. The active group ranged from light physical activity such as walking, gardening, bowling or biking for a minimum of four hours per week to regular intense exercise such as running or swimming several times a week or engaging in competitive sports. A total of 17 per cent of the participants were in the inactive group and 82 per cent were in the active group. During the study, 194 women developed dementia. Of those, 102 had Alzheimer’s disease, 27 had vascular dementia and 41 had mixed dementia, where more than one type of dementia is present, such as the plaques and tangles of Alzheimer’s disease along with the blood vessel changes seen in vascular dementia. The study found that women with high level of mental activities were 46 per cent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and 34 per cent less likely to develop dementia overall than the women with the low level of mental activities. The women who were physically active were 52 per cent less likely to develop dementia with cerebrovascular disease and 56 per cent less likely to develop mixed dementia than the women who were inactive. The researchers took into account other factors that could affect the risk of dementia, such as high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes. They also ran the results again after excluding women who developed dementia about halfway through the study to rule out the possibility that those women may have been in the prodromal stage of dementia, with less participation in the activities as an early symptom. The results were similar, except that physical activity was then associated with a 34 per cent reduced risk of dementia overall. Of the 438 women with the high level of mental activity, 104 developed dementia, compared to 90 of the 347 women with the low level of activity. Of the 648 women with the high level of physical activity, 159 developed dementia, compared to 35 of the 137 women who were inactive.
