Challenges and Solutions in 2017 Cruise Market

first_imgImage Courtesy: GE’s Marine SolutionsChina’s rapid economic evolution has attracted more people to leisure travel opportunities and the number of Chinese passengers is expected to reach 4.5 million by 2020, representing more than 20 percent of today’s global cruise passengers, according to GE’s Marine Solutions. Some 130 million Chinese citizens travel internationally, making China the world’s largest outbound travel market in the world. In addition to relaxed visa rules, China is set to accommodate more foreign visitors from cruise vessels.Cruise shipbuilding is developing in parallel, signalled by the move made by cruise giant Carnival Corporation, which recently signed a joint venture agreement to design and build two cruise ships with the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and Fincantieri. These will be the first ships ever to be built in China for the Chinese market and will be tailored to meet the needs of Chinese travelers. In 2017, as the cruise market evolves, a number of industry changes and considerations are coming to bear.Advanced technology leading the wayThe attraction of going off the beaten track has given rise to the expeditionary travel market. Many of these adventure holidays involve a cruise element, and this growing sector, with demand for smaller vessels, is impacting the industry. At the other end of the market, there is growth in very high-capacity, high-specification vessels for the luxury experience.Whatever end of the cruise sector, space on board ships is always at a premium; more cabin and facilities space means higher revenue potential. Therefore, power-dense engines, propulsion motors and power electronics with a reduced footprint are the preferred choice for ship owners and operators. GE’s compact, COmbined Gas turbine Electric and Steam (COGES) propulsion system can help save valuable space on board.Enhanced manoeuvrability is also particularly important for cruise ships.Clean sailing through strict regulationFollowing the COP21 Paris Agreement, emissions reduction has been high on the agenda for every industry. In fact, the marine industry as a whole is responsible for about 2.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. In an effort to curb emissions, various governmental organizations around the world are introducing strict regulations, which are set to impact maritime operations. In the European Union (EU), for example, new regulations come into force in 2017 requiring any large vessel docking at an EU port to monitor and report its CO2 emissions. In China, the government is creating emission control areas at major shipping ports, introducing a sulphur cap at 0.5 percent, ahead of the global IMO 2020 regulations. To adhere to these regulations, marine operators need to rethink the most fundamental aspects of their operating models—how they consider everything from vessel design to vessel management to fuel choice and maintenance—to be compliant with the environmental regulations. New technologies can incur costs from development and upgrades, but also can bring efficiencies that lead to a fast return on investment and strengthen a market position for operators.Along the green wave, alternative clean fuel, such as LNG, will become a more predominant marine fuel. The move is typified by Carnival Corporation, which has three LNG-powered cruise ships on order.Riding the crest of the digital waveBooming demand is also incentivizing the cruise industry to dip into digital waters to further raise efficiency and ensure a smooth journey for passengers.Unplanned downtime for any cruise line can cause interruptions to passengers’ journeys, loss of revenues and potential brand damage. However, analytic tools can predict an equipment’s potential failure before it becomes an operational disruption, reducing downtime and more crucially, avoiding disruptions during the voyage. This predictivity can also enable a shift from calendar- to condition-based maintenance, further reducing maintenance cost.Digital technology can also help improve fuel efficiency by analyzing weather conditions and current to optimize propulsion rate and speed. Furthermore, it can help operators make smart decisions to change to use cleaner fuels on the course of the route, depending on the speed needed, further curbing emissions and cost of fuel.“As the demand for cruise holidays soars, fleets continue to grow. While stringent regulations and new destinations may provide new challenges, they bring with them a host of opportunities. New regulations will push operators towards more efficient operations with reduced carbon footprint, while new destinations open up new revenue streams. By using the right technology—green and digital—operators are sailing in the right direction to capitalize on the opportunities in 2017 as well as those further on the horizon,” GE’s Marine Solutions said.last_img read more

Doping scandal hits English cricket opener in World Cup squad tests positive

first_imgAlex Hales is in hot water after testing positive for use of recreational drugsReutersWith just over a month to go for the ICC 2019 Cricket World Cup, England’s cricket team has been hit by an unwanted controversy. Alex Hales, the opening batsman, who had apparently gone on an ‘indefinite leave’ citing ‘personal reasons’ has now been discovered to be actually serving a 21-day ban after testing positive for use of a recreational drug. According to a report published in the Guardian newspaper, Hales was discovered to be in use of the aforementioned substance following a test which is routinely conducted by the England Cricket Board (ECB).The right hander, who plays for Nottinghamshire in county circuit, is part of the England 15-man squad for the upcoming World Cup. His decision to seek an indefinite leave had left the team concerned about his availability for the big event that starts on May 30.Prone to controversyThe 30-year old is no stranger to controversies. In 2017, he was with Ben Stokes when the latter was involved in a street brawl outside a pub in Bristol that led to legal action as well as penalties from the cricket authorities. Apart from that, Hales had tested positive for drug use once before as well, something that compounds his present offence. Hales was with Ben Stokes during the infamous brawl in BristolADRIAN DENNIS/AFP/Getty ImagesEngland Cricket Board (ECB) has created a strong policy to detect and act in such cases. This follows the death of Tom Maynard, a budding Surrey cricketer who died in 2012 and was discovered as having been under the influence of recreational substances. All England cricketers are required to submit their hair follicles for testing on a regular basis.Hales has been in and out of the England ODI team since the incident with Ben Stokes. It was the episode in Bristol that first allowed Jonny Bairstow to come into the playing XI as his replacement in the opening position. The impressive performances by Bairstow meant that Hales had to often be the reserve batsman in the squad. The FalloutThe primary opening partnership for the English ODI team currently is Jason Roy and Bairstow. The danger for Hales now is an exclusion from the eventual 15-man squad that England announce. The squad that has been selected as of now is a provisional one as the ICC rules allow teams to make changes till May 23. If England want, they can choose to leave Hales out of the final 15.England’s national side have a training camp taking place in Cardiff which begins this weekend. The Notts player is expected to join it. The English team kick off their international summer with an ODI against Ireland on May 3. This will be followed by a very crucial 5-match ODI series against Pakistan beginning on 8th of the month. The final composition of the playing XI as well as the 15-man squad will depend on the outcomes of this series.last_img read more

Pool Season Starts in DC

first_imgBy George Kevin Jordan, Special to the AFROIt’s time to dust off your goggles, pull out that snorkel and gather those fins, as D.C. gets ready for pool season. This past week, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District rolled out the official pool season during a press event at Langdon Pool and Spray Park, 2680 Miles Avenue, N.E. In 2018, Langdon went through a $3 million renovation which made it the only place in D.C. with a combination of pool and spray park. Other features of Langdon include: a new pool and all new equipment, six lap lanes, ADA ramp and handrail into the pool, drinking fountain for people and their pets, and a splash pad area, with multiple spray features, according to the mayor’s office.Public pools are now open in the District on weekends and will be open on weekdays beginning June 17.(Courtesy Photo: dpr.dc.gov)“In D.C., we view our parks and pools and playgrounds and senior wellness centers not as a luxury, but as must haves – in every neighborhood, in every corner of the District,” said Mayor Bowser. Washington, D.C. celebrated being ranked  the #1 park system in the country by The Trust for Public Land. The Trust’s survey found that 98 percent of District residents live within a 10 minute walk of a park.“The investments we’ve made have helped us achieve the #1 ranked park system in the nation, including a world-class system of indoor and outdoor pools for D.C, families to enjoy throughout the summer,” Bowser said.“We achieve this honor by investing more than $200 million to ensure that all residents have this great access. Coming into office we made another pledge that all of our fitness and recreational centers would be absolutely free for D.C. residents.”“So we recognize how important it is, especially in a growing city to have better access to places where they can have fun for free.”The mayor spoke of adding 1,000 new slots to eight sites around the city for kids, as well as other investments in the district’s summer camp programs. “When we’re talking about giving people a fair shot we want to make sure we have free things, as [often] as we can, including this pool,” Bowser said.  “…we have affordable and [many] activities for families. When we do that we know that everybody has equal access to opportunity around our city.”The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is expanding swim hours for 10 pool locations including: Anacostia, Francis, Langdon, Kenilworth, Oxon Run, Lincoln Capper, Happy Hollow, Harry Thomas, Upshur, and Banneker. those locations will open at 10 a.m. instead of 11 a.m.Pools will be open on a weekend-only schedule (Saturday and Sunday) through June 16. Starting Monday, June 17, all outdoor pools will operate on individual summer schedule. Spray Parks open Saturday, May 25 and operate daily, from 10 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., according to the mayor’s office. The DPR aquatic inventory includes 19 outdoor pools, 11 indoor pools, 23 spray parks and three children’s pools. For more information on the summer outdoor pool schedule, visit: dpr.dc.gov/page/outdoor-pools.last_img read more

Sprint TMobile Agree to Merger Thats Poised to Change the US Telecom

In the video, the duo made the case that the merger was essential to advance 5G, a next-generation wireless networking technology that promises not only faster speeds for mobile devices, but that could ultimately replace fixed-line internet access. The merger could significantly change the power dynamic in the U.S. mobile market: T-Mobile and Sprint have been the No. 3 and 4 in the U.S. mobile market, respectively. Combined, the two companies will have more than 125 million subscribers. AT&T ended 2017 with more than 141 million wireless subscribers in the U.S., whereas Verizon led the pack with 150 million subscribers. While remaining a distant third, T-Mobile has long enjoyed an outsized role in the U.S. mobile market. For instance, the company was first to introduce unlimited data plans, forcing other carriers to follow suit. Legere’s combative personality also allowed the company to style itself as an underdog taking on incumbent carriers. But what truly sets T-Mobile apart from AT&T and Verizon are their different takes on the media business. Both AT&T and Verizon operate their own TV services, and have long invested aggressively into online media businesses. T-Mobile and Sprint on the other hand have traditionally been focused on their core businesses.Verizon acquired AOL in 2015, and doubled down on online media with the acquisition of Yahoo last year. The company has also been looking to make inroads with mobile-first media audiences with its Go90 video service, and plans to launch an internet-based TV service sometime this year.AT&T is already operating an internet TV service with DirecTV Now and has also been investing into online video businesses through Otter Media, a joint-venture with the Chernin Group. The company also struck an agreement to acquire Time Warner last year, and is currently defending the merger in court. After years of negotiations, it’s finally official: Mobile carriers Sprint and T-Mobile have agreed to join forces in a mega-merger, the two companies announced Sunday. The all-stock transaction, which puts the value of the combined company at $146 billion, is poised to significantly change the U.S. telecom and media landscape. The combined company will be known as T-Mobile and led by T-Mobile CEO John Legere. T-Mobile’s current COO Mike Sievert will serve as president and COO of the combined company. Sprint CEO Marcello Claure will serve on the board of the new company, but not have any active management role. Joining him on the board will be Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son. T-Mobile is also keeping the combined company on its books.T-Mobile majority owner Deutsche Telekom will hold a 42% stake in the new company, whereas Sprint majority owner SoftBank will hold 27%, with the rest held by public shareholders. If approved, the transaction is expected to close by early 2019. Compared to these massive deals, T-Mobile’s and Sprint’s media buying sprees have been relatively small thus far. T-Mobile acquired broadband-delivered cable TV upstart Layer3 TV in December, and at the time announced plans to launch a nationwide internet TV service in 2018. And Sprint acquired a 33% stake in Jay Z’s music streaming service Tidal a little over a year ago. This could potentially help both companies with regulators, who are expected to take a very close look at the proposed merger. Both the FCC and the Justice Department opposed a merger between the two companies four years ago, arguing that it would reduce competition and harm consumers. However, both agencies are under new leadership, and President Trump is generally seen as less opposed to big corporate mergers. On Sunday, Legere and Claure made the case that their industry had significantly changed over the past couple of years. “In reality, this industry is no longer just four wireless companies,” Claure said. Instead, AT&T had become the biggest TV provider in the U.S., and cable operators like Comcast were increasingly launching their own wireless services. “It’s not the big four anymore. It’s the big seven or eight,” he said. Popular on Variety last_img read more
