He was wanted on an unrelated warrant, they said. City officials have asked for extra summertime park patrols by sheriff’s deputies – planned to start in June – to be started as soon as possible, Greene said. Warm weather like this week seems to draw more people who commit vandalism, get into fistfights and cause other problems in parks, Greene said. Thursday’s shooting appeared to have occurred during a confrontation between groups of men in two cars, who moments earlier had left a college parking lot after they drew the attention of campus police. “Fortunately for us there aren’t any classes in session,” college spokesman Steve Standerfer said. LANCASTER – A 22-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting in the parking lot of a park across the street from Antelope Valley College. People attending baseball practice at Rawley Duntley Park’s southern end cleared out after hearing the gunfire Thursday evening from the park’s northern parking lot, a park official said. “The staff that were there heard the shots. People seemed to respond immediately and left the park,” Parks, Recreation and Arts assistant director Bob Greene said. The wounded man’s name was not immediately released. Witnesses reported hearing about a half-dozen shots about 6:30 p.m. Thursday coming from the Rawley Duntley parking lot in the 3300 block of West Avenue K, deputies said. Witnesses reported seeing a car speed away and run a red light. A student flagged down a campus police officer and reported a shooting at the park across the street. When officers arrived they found bullet casings and blood, but the victim had already been taken away by companions.
