Longtime resident Sawyer dies at 78

first_imgWHITTIER – A funeral service for longtime Whittier resident Lorraine J. Sawyer, who was married to former Whittier Mayor Thomas K. Sawyer, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bruno Catholic Church in Whittier. She died Saturday at the Walnut Villa Residence. Born March 19, 1929, in Spokane, Wash., Lorraine Josephine Leum and her family lived for several years in Kansas City, Kan., and moved to Los Angeles in 1942. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Elementary School in 1943 and from Bishop Conaty Girls High School in 1947. On June 19, 1949, Tom and Lorraine were married at Immaculate Conception Church, and in 1962 they moved to Whittier where they bought a home in Friendly Hills. Lorraine was a longtime member of the La Sertoma service club and was an active parishioner of St. Bruno Catholic Church in Whittier. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Lorraine is survived by three grown children, Tim Sawyer of Newport Beach, Mary Ann Bakatich of Whittier and Brian Sawyer of Denver, Colorado; and three grandchildren, Nick and Geena Bakatich and Christopher Sawyer. She is also survived by her brother, Leonard R. Leum, and sister, Mary J. Meziere; two sisters-in-law, Donna Schmidt and Connie Sawyer; and more than 40 nieces and nephews throughout the United States and Europe. She will be interred alongside her husband, Tom, at Holy Cross Cemetery in Los Angeles.last_img
