MYS Drops Basketball, Volleyball from County Meet

Bryant Mcgill, said the two disciplines will not participate because of lack of funding, but other sources said it is because of leadership crisis in the two institutions.The legislature approved US$250k instead of the $500k submitted by the Ministry of Youth & Sports in the 2017/2018 Fiscal Budget.Nimba County is the defending champion of football and kickball.“Athletics —- track & field has regained rights to participate in this year’s County Meet because the SKD Sports Complex is completed,” Bryant said.Athletics has not been included in the past three County Meets, because of lack of track and field’s facilities, as the country only available venue, the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex was undergoing renovation.Mcgill said the 2017/2018 edition of the County Meet would kick-off in Gbarnga, Bong County on December 2.The opening ceremony is expected to be graced by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Vice President Joseph N. Boakai and other senior government officials.Liberia’s 15 counties have been split into four groups, with matches in the preliminary round expected to take place in the leeward counties.The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) has released the draw for the 2017/2018 National County Sports Meet.Group ‘A’ will feature Sinoe, Maryland, Grand Kru and River Gee to be based in Greenville.Group ‘B’ which will be based in Gbarnga, consists of Bong, Nimba, Grand Gedeh and Lofa.Group ‘C’ consists of Grand Bassa, River Cess, Montserrado and Margibi and will be based in Buchanan.Group ‘D’ will feature Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu and Bomi to be based Robertsport.Unlike in the past where the quarter-finalists play a one-off match; there will be two groups for a round robin to qualify for the semi-finals.The National County Sports Meet which stated in 1956 is the biggest sporting event in Liberia.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img
