NFL Draft 2019: Montez Sweat’s heart condition may have been misdiagnosed at combine

first_imgBetter late than never, but as it turns out, the NFL Combine reports of an enlarged heart for former Mississippi State defensive end Montez Sweat may have been nothing to sweat about at all.Following a stellar 2018 season for the Bulldogs in which Sweat recorded 14 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks, the 6-6, 260-pound edge rusher was in the discussion to be one of the first picks of the 2019 NFL Draft, likely only after fellow linemen like Nick Bosa or Ed Oliver. More: Vinnie Iyer’s final mock draftBut medical tests at the combine revealed that Sweat had a heart condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy — a condition in which a portion of the heart becomes abnormally thick. This led to a fall Sweat’s draft stock and even a total removal from several team’s draft boards.New reports on the morning of the draft, however, indicate that doctors at the combine may have made an error when measuring the thickness of Sweat’s heart. NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport spoke with several sources close to the situation that Sweat has since been re-evaluted by Dr. James Muntz, who determined his heart is not enlarged. From our NFL pre-draft coverage: #MSU pass-rusher Montez Sweat may have been misdiagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Two sources say the thickness of Sweat’s heart wall is actually 1.5 cms, not nearly 2.0. I explain below why the risk could be much lower. pic.twitter.com/PUVsbO2tDw— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 25, 2019The error is believed to have been that doctors at the combine included the papillary muscle when measuring the thickness of his heart wall, adding an extra 0.5 cm to the total thickness. Without measuring the muscle, Sweat’s heart is 1.5 cm thick, and therefore not deemed enlarged. With just hours before the draft, the recent news surrounding Sweat’s health could cause several teams to reevaluate Sweat and potentially move the former Bulldog up the draft board. In 2017 Michigan defensive tackle Maurice Hurst was considered a potential top-10 pick until he, too, was diagnosed at the combine with a similar heart problem Hurst’s stock fell significantly until he was chosen in the fifth round by the Raiders. He had four sacks last year for Oakland.last_img
