Source: Dodgers will host 2020 All-Star Game

first_imgLOS ANGELES — Forty years after the Midsummer Classic made its most recent visit to Dodger Stadium, the All-Star Game will return to Los Angeles.MLB commissioner Rob Manfred will be at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday for a press conference. Manfred will make “a major announcement,” according to a source. That announcement will be naming the Dodgers as hosts for the 2020 All-Star Game and surrounding events, according to a source. The Dodgers have not hosted an All-Star Game since 1980 – when four Dodgers started the game (Davey Lopes, Steve Garvey, Bill Russell and Reggie Smith). This year’s game will be played at Nationals Park and the 2019 game has been awarded to the Cleveland Indians. Manfred indicated this spring in Arizona that he expected to announce hosts for the 2020, 2021 and 2022 All-Star Games “in the near future.” MLB has traditionally tried to alternate National League and American League cities. Although Dodger Stadium has not hosted the event since 1980, the All-Star Game has visited Southern California multiple times since then. The Angels hosted the game in 1989 and again in 2010. The San Diego Padres hosted the game at then Jack Murphy Stadium in 1992 and Petco Park in 2016.Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson posted a tweet Tuesday afternoon celebrating the All-Star Game’s return to Los Angeles – and then quickly deleted it. But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts treated it as a fait accompli when he was asked about the news before Tuesday night’s game.“It’s been a long time. It’s been a long time,” Roberts said. “So for Major League Baseball and the city of Los Angeles to come together and get it here in 2020, I think it’s a thrill not only for the Dodgers but for the great fan base of Los Angeles.”Related Articles How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Fire danger is on Dave Roberts’ mind as Dodgers head to San Francisco Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start center_img Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies last_img
