Earlier this week they ran the Boston Marathon. It is considered the Super Bowl of marathons. More than 36,000 were registered for this years’ event. I have been a track and cross country coach for most of my adult life, but I still wonder what possesses a person to run 26.2 miles at one time. To some it is simply the inner drive to prove they can do something that only a small portion of the population would even try to do. Most of the people I know who do run marathons do it for health reasons. Marathons can be run at one’s own pace, and to be a good marathoner, you have to develop a slow heartbeat which most medical people feel is very good for you.The true marathoner always goes out to beat their own record. Unless you are a Kenyon, you don’t do it to win. A lot of the marathons have age categories so the over 50 crowd are competing against their own age. One of the goals of most of these runners is to break the 3-hour mark which I believe is still the qualifying mark for the Boston Marathon. A quick math calculation means you can run these 26 miles at a near 8+ mph pace. Good luck if you are considering being a marathoner!
