Shutdown showed weak Trump, GOP

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionIn today’s America, facts are replaced by alternate facts. Claims of “fake news” distort reality with evil intent eerily similar to “lugenpresse” in 1930’s Germany. The comfortable lie is that we are a democracy that conceals the uncomfortable truth that we have one political party. This party controls all three branches in what was intended by our founding fathers to be a separation of powers and checks-and-balances government. The recent government shutdown was a picture of a destabilized America.During the Republican-orchestrated government shutdown in 2013, this is what private citizen Donald Trump said of President Obama: “A shutdown falls on the president’s lack of leadership. He can’t even control his party and get people together in a room. A shutdown means the president is weak.”The recent government shutdown not only proved Trump is a weak president by his own description, it also proved the Democrat Party lacks the courage of its convictions. And soon, it will prove whether or not the Republican Party can be trusted to put country above party. One of the primary reasons Vladimir Putin supported Donald Trump by interfering in the 2016 presidential election was that he calculated a Trump presidency would be the fastest way to destabilize the United States, thereby allowing Russia to become a dominant superpower. The recent government shutdown exposed a weak President Trump whose lack of leadership has proven Putin to be correct.John PagodaRensselaerMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsEDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen?Gov.
